Trustee update

We're delighted to announce two appointments to our Trustee Board: Lisa Drew and Jason Brook.

Read our 60-second interviews with both Lisa and Jason to find out a little more about each of them.

Lisa Drew

Hi Lisa, could you give us a little bit of information on your background with Wincanton?

I have worked for Wincanton for just over 6 years. I joined the business as a Regional HR Manager. I have worked in several sectors, supporting various customers and projects across Wincanton. I achieved a promotion to HR Business Partner in 2019 supporting the old Consumer Business Unit. Then in 2020 I became Head of People for General Merchandise Sector.

Why did you want to become a Trustee Director?

In my role within the People Team in Wincanton, I felt that I could use my transferable skill set to support my responsibilities as a Pensions Trustee. I wanted to add value for the Scheme members, and also saw it as a great opportunity to gain more knowledge and understanding of pension schemes and pensions law.

What are you most looking forward to about the role?

I am looking forward to growing my knowledge in this area and also knowing that I can support making decisions which impact Scheme members positively.

What do you see as the main challenges for pension savers?

I believe that there is still a lot of confusion around pensions and some savers will question if they are making the right decisions to support their pension funds. On top of this, on the back of the pandemic and the current cost of living crisis, some savers are struggling to save enough through their pension schemes that will provide an adequate income for when they retire. The impact of this won’t become evident for a lot of people until they reach the later years of their working lives. This may then have an adverse impact on savers' affordability when they retire from employment or alternatively, they may choose to work for longer to guarantee a continued income.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to go to the gym (when I get the time…) and I love to bake with my children, although we probably enjoy eating our bakes more than actually making them!

Jason Brook

Hi Jason, could you give us a little bit of information on your background with Wincanton?

I started working for Asda, Wincanton in Rochdale in November 2012 as a HGV driver.

Why did you want to become a Trustee Director?

The reason I wanted to become a Trustee Director was initially to get an understanding of how pensions worked for myself. Since becoming a Trustee Director, I have realised that the knowledge I have already gained, is also useful for my colleagues. This has enabled me to support my colleagues as and when they need help.

What do you see as the main challenges for pension savers?

The main challenge I see for savers is understanding the pension process to ensure they have adequate savings for retirement. This includes simplifying the work’s pension website so colleagues can have easier access to monitor their own pensions.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

For the last 12 years I have been a Parish Councillor in my local area and I am currently the Chairman (mayor).

I also recently joined a five-a-side football team to improve my fitness.
